When it comes to mobile investing apps, there's always an app out there with the right amount of features for the right person.

On the flipside, there's also many investing apps out there that have either too little or too much, depending on what you're looking for in your mobile investing experience.

TD Ameritrade offers many features for mobile investors, including an interactive watchlist, educational resources, and advanced indicator controls.

However, sometimes it's easy to get lost in the woods. With so many features, learning and navigating apps like TD Ameritrade can become confusing or even frustrating.

How To Transfer From TD Ameritrade To Public

Fortunately for us, transferring into Public is pretty easy.

All you need to do is copy your TD Ameritrade account info, sign up for Public, and start a transfer with your TD account info inside of Public's app.

What we'll be doing is called an Automated Customer Account Transfer Service, or ACATs for short. If you ever find yourself doing a transfer like this again, you can find out your current broker's fees involved by searching for their ACATs fees.

Conveniently with Public, they will cover any transfer fees for you, so long as your portfolio's worth over $150!

Transferring From TD Ameritrade To Public:

  1. Locate your TD Ameritrade Account Info
  2. Sign Up For Public
  3. Transfer Your Stocks To Public

Let's get busy.

1. Locate Your TD Ameritrade Account Info

TD Ameritrade Logo

In order to move your stocks from TD into Public, we'll need to find and copy some key details from your TD Ameritrade account for the transfer.

Specifically, Public will need to know the following:

  • Type of Brokerage Account (Personal/Individual/Taxable, Roth IRA, traditional IRA, etc)
  • Your TD Ameritrade Account Number

At the time of writing, Public may not be accepting direct transfers from 401K and Retirement accounts.

Here's how to get both inside your TD Ameritrade app:

  1. Make sure you're logged in to your account
  2. At the bottom of the home screen, click "More"
  3. Choose "My Profile"
  4. Select "Account Information"
  5.  Note what type of account you have
  6. Click "Show" to reveal your full account number

If you have multiple accounts with TD, you'll have to perform a transfer for each.
Copy down the info for each account you want to transfer.

2. Sign Up For Public

Now that you have your account info from TD, we can open your new Public account.

To transfer stocks from TD into Public, you need to open a Public account of the same type as your TD account - Personal/Individual/Taxable, Roth IRA, traditional IRA, etc.

If you open up the wrong type of account, you will be unable to transfer your stocks.

Already have a Public account that matches your TD account? Awesome, start step 3!

Use this link when signing up for a free stock slice, on us!

  1. Download the Public app
  2. Click "Get Started"
  3. Provide your phone number and name
  4. Choose your username
  5. Provide your email address
  6. Create a strong password
  7. Choose to follow some new accounts
  8. Claim your free stock slice! (only works with referral link)
  9. Confirm your citizenship
  10. Submit photo ID for fast-track verification
  11. Provide birthdate and personal information
  12. Accept Terms & Conditions if you agree
  13. Fill out investment goals questionnaire
  14. Make your first deposit by Linking your Bank

It may take a couple of days for your application to get approved, up to even 10 business days.

3. Transfer Your Stocks To Public

Now that everything is in place, we can take the info you copied from your TD Ameritrade accounts, and use it to start a transfer inside the Public app:

  1. From the main screen, click the person icon in the bottom right corner
  2. Click the gear icon on the top right corner
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click "Transfer my stocks to Public"
  4. Enter your TD Ameritrade Account Number, and click Next
  5. Enter your Public account info to confirm
  6. Select either "Full" or "Partial" transfer
  7. If only partially transferring, select assets to transfer

You can choose to transfer either all of your assets, or just do a partial transfer. If you transfer everything over, your TD Ameritrade account will close.

With TD Ameritrade, partial outgoing transfers are free, but full transfers cost a $75 ACATs fee.

Again, if your account's value is worth over $150, Public will pay all of these fees for you.

If your account isn't worth $150+ yet, consider purchasing more stock inside your TD account before transferring.

Doing an ACATs transfer with Public won't incur any taxes for you, and will take a few business days to fully process.
